Political and psychological analysis of "Golda" movie

The October victory in the eyes of Israel...a defeat between (the past and the present)

Political and psychological analysis of "Golda" movie

On the 50th anniversary of the glorious victory of the October War, this great victory; Egypt, which was victorious over the Israeli enemy  with many, many proofs, the strength of the Egyptian army, and the strength of the deception skills carried out by the late President Mohamed Anwar Sadat.
In those days, the Israeli media begins to publish the opposite of the facts, whether through Hebrew newspapers or social networking sites, specifically through the spokesman for the Israeli army, Avichai Adraee, who spreads some lies about that Israel was the one who won the October 1973 war.
Until this year we reached a revival of the war from the Israeli side in a different way
Hollywood revived the “Israeli” war in October 1973 in American cinema on August 25, 2023, through a movie called “Golda”, which was directed by “Israeli” Guy Nattiv and written by British Nicholas Martin, and starring the star Helen Mirren, along with Zaid Joseph and Claudette Williams.
The film focuses on “Golda” primarily on the challenges and decisions faced by Prime Minister Golda Meir, also known as the “Iron Lady of Israel,” during the 1973 Yom Kippur War.
The goals of the film “Golda” were to provide a detailed look at the biography of the Israeli Prime Minister before and after that important war.
The film “Golda” also deals with the interrogation of the Prime Minister by the investigation committee into the reasons for Israel’s defeat in the October War, where she succeeded in convincing the committee in the end that she had dealt with this crisis in an extremely intelligent manner and had succeeded in turning it into a victory.
It is clear that the main goal that the film sought to achieve was to highlight the human side of an influential figure and contribute to understanding her role in the peace process during the October 1973 War, focusing on her diplomatic and political skills.
The author also succeeded in presenting a new portrayal of the common enemy that makes sympathy with “Israel” a purely humanitarian matter.
In previous films that dealt with the Jewish people and their tragedy, they tended to rely on the depiction of Hitler and Nazi Germany as factors that highlight the story.
However, in the film “Golda”, the Arabs supported by Russia appear as the enemy, threatening to intervene in the region and threatening to pull the rug from under the feet of the United States.
The latter is making intense efforts to maintain its relationship with OPEC and ensure the continued flow of oil from Arab countries, in the context of internal political complications arising from the Watergate scandal. In the context of the dramatic filmThe author used a dramatic story in the movie “Golda”, represented by Golda’s account of herself when she was a child, as her father worked hard to protect her and her siblings from Russian soldiers who were killing children in Ukraine.
Throughout, the word “Russia” is used instead of “Soviet Union,” clearly indicating the makers’ desire to bring as much support and sympathy as possible.
The author formulated this dramatic narrative in the movie “Golda” with the aim of creating an atmosphere of sympathy for the elderly woman and her family, who did not talk about the genocide crimes committed against them by the so-called “Arabs.”
This story was represented in the effective card that the Prime Minister adopted to put pressure on her friend Henry Kissinger, the US Secretary of State at that time, with the aim of playing the role of mediator with Egyptian President Anwar Sadat.
This is in order to push him towards recognizing “Israel”, declaring a ceasefire, and implementing the exchange of captured soldiers and the bodies of the dead from both sides.
The movie “Golda” showed several flaws of the famous major generals. Defense Minister Moshe Dayan was showing aggressive behavior, while Ariel Sharon was considered reckless in his decisions.
For intelligence chief Eli Ezer, the film shows that he was suspected of a conspiracy.
The movie “Golda” shows all of its characters smoking excessively, with hardly any of them putting down their cigarette for a single moment throughout the film’s 100-minute duration.
The writer is not “Israeli”
The film “Golda” was not written by an “Israeli” writer, as is usual in Israel’s narrative about the war, but rather it was written by the British writer Nicholas Martin.
Nicholas Martin suffered most of his professional and academic life from obstacles and difficulties, starting from the stage of his academic studies until he stopped writing for two years due to the failure to implement his literary works.
In 2014, Martin met the film's producer, Florence Foster Jenkins, who gave him a great opportunity to implement this work, which witnessed the brilliance of the star Meryl Streep in the title role.
Martin was previously known for his political activity for a period of time, but currently, he is mainly known as a progressive person who strongly advocates for human rights.
As for the “Israeli” director, Guy Nattiv, he was known for his limited-known works inside “Israel,” but he succeeded in entering the world of Hollywood and achieved success when he won the Academy Award as best director for his short film “Skin” in 2019.
The film “Golda” was shown for the world premiere during the 73rd Berlin International Film Festival on February 20, 2023, and later it was also shown at the Jerusalem Film Festival on July 13, 2023.
