Imprisoned Iranian women's rights activist Narges Mohammadi has won the 2023 Nobel Peace Prize. The head of the Norwegian Nobel Committee, Berrit Reiss-Andersen, said in Oslo that the award rewarded the 51-year-old activist and journalist for “her battle against the oppression of women in Iran and her struggle to promote human rights and freedom for all.” The Nobel Committee hoped that Iran would release the activist Mohammadi after she won the Peace Prize. Narges Mohammadi is one of the most prominent Iranian human rights activists who defends women's rights and also calls for the abolition of the death penalty. The Iranian activist was arrested several times, the last of which was in May 2015. Today, she is serving multiple sentences in Evin Prison in Tehran, a total of approximately 12 years, according to the Front Line Defenders organization concerned with defending rights , The Nobel Peace Prize said her courageous struggle came at enormous personal costs. In all, she was convicted 5 times, and sentenced to 31 years in prison and 154 lashes. Narges Mohammadi is still in prison.
